Clear the Brush, Keep the Trees Worth Keeping

Brush clearing starts with land that has closed in on you. A field you once mowed is now briars and saplings, and the fence line is lost in vines. The trees you want are still in there, crowded by growth you never planted. Every season you wait, the saplings get bigger and the job gets heavier.

We match the tool to the brush. Woody brush and saplings go through the forestry mulching head on our track loader and get ground in place. Grass and light brush go under the tractor's rotary cutter, and the grapple piles limbs and loose brush. It is the selective side of our land clearing work: the brush comes out, and the trees you pick stay.

What We Handle

  • Selective clearing that keeps good trees
  • Woody brush mulched in place
  • Underbrush clearing under standing timber
  • Fields and pastures gone to brush
  • Overgrown fence lines opened up
  • Shooting lanes and stand trails
  • Rotary cutter work on light brush
  • Grapple piling on your property

The Problem: Brush Closes In on Open Ground

Left alone, brush keeps spreading into the places you use most. The back lane narrows until a truck scrapes both sides. Underbrush fills in under the timber and hides the good trees. On hunting ground, shooting lanes close up and the path to the stand gets harder to follow.

Some of that brush is not native. LSU AgCenter calls Chinese tallow one of the most aggressive invasive trees threatening Louisiana's forests. It notes that tallow is common along fence lines, pastures, waterways and forest edges.

Our Solution: The Right Tool for Each Kind of Brush

We do brush clearing out of Rayville across Northeast Louisiana, and in Vicksburg, Natchez and Crossett across the state lines. Woody brush and saplings go to the forestry mulching head on our John Deere compact track loader. It grinds them in place, and the chips stay on the ground as mulch. Under timber, it can work between the trunks you are keeping.

Grass and light brush in open ground go under the tractor's rotary cutter instead. It suits a field that has only started to grow up. Once a field is open again, a regular cut through our bush hogging service keeps it that way.

The loader's grapple picks up limbs, loose brush and old piles and stacks them where you want them. The same grapple work clears downed limbs in storm cleanup. When brush is one item on a longer list, it fits a day of skid steer and track loader services.

What Comes Back After Brush Clearing

Clearing takes brush down to the ground, and some of it comes back from the roots. LSU AgCenter says cutting Chinese tallow without an herbicide is not effective. Cut trees commonly resprout from their stumps and damaged roots. The AgCenter reports that larger privet re-sprouts from stumps and root fragments too.

Follow-up control of those resprouts is your call or a licensed applicator's. Our part is the mechanical side. The rotary cutter or the mulching head can come back on a schedule to keep the regrowth knocked down. Plan that follow-up before the clearing, so the sprouts get handled while they are small.

What Brush Clearing Does for Your Land

With the brush out, you can use the land you own again. You can follow the fence line and drive the back lane. A field gone to brush can go back to grazing or hay. Boundary lines show again, which helps when you build a fence or sell.

On hunting ground, clearing opens shooting lanes and the trails to each stand. It ties into our wildlife habitat work, so the cover left standing is cover you chose.

A tract also shows better with the brush gone. A buyer can see into the woods, and the trees you kept stand out.

What is the difference between brush clearing and land clearing?
Brush clearing takes out the brush layer: briars, vines, saplings and underbrush. The trees you want stay standing. Land clearing goes further and opens ground for a new use, such as a homesite or a field. Some jobs past brush need a dozer or excavator crew, and we tell you when that is the case.
Do you use a bush hog or a mulcher for brush clearing?
It depends on the brush. The tractor's rotary cutter, the tool many people call a bush hog, handles grass and light brush in open ground. Woody brush and saplings go to the mulching head on the track loader. Some tracts need both: the cutter in the open and the mulching head along the edges and under the trees.
Can you clear the underbrush and leave the trees?
Yes, that is selective clearing. The trees that stay get picked out with you before we start. Then the mulching head works between the trunks and takes out the underbrush. What is left is open woods you can see into and move through.
What happens to the brush after you clear it?
It stays on your property. The mulching head grinds woody brush into chips that stay on the ground as mulch. The grapple gathers loose brush, old piles and limbs into piles where you choose. If you decide to burn a pile later, that decision is yours, under Louisiana's open burning rules. Louisiana's Department of Environmental Quality notes that the state bans open burning of certain materials. Local ordinances add their own rules.
How much does brush clearing cost?
National cost guides price brush removal by the acre. One puts it at $800 to $3,000 an acre, and up to $5,000 where trees are mixed in. Its table lists light brush, on land with no trees or a few young ones, at $800 to $1,800. Heavy brush, about half brush and half trees, runs $1,600 to $3,000. That guide also lists minimum fees of $250 to $600 per visit. Our land clearing cost per acre guide puts a light brush tier beside heavier clearing. The on-site estimate for your tract is free.
Can you clear brush for shooting lanes and trails?
Yes. Shooting lane clearing, trail systems and stand access are part of our hunting land work. The mulching head cuts a lane through the brush and leaves the trees on each side. The rotary cutter keeps open lanes mowed between seasons. Mark your stand sites before we start, so the lanes run where you plan to hunt.
Do you clear brush off homesites?
Yes. Brush clearing on a homesite shows you the building spot and the trees worth keeping near it. We take out the brush and leave the shade trees you pick. Once the building spot is open, the next step is often a house pad.
